Qatar: General Information

Qatar is a small peninsula of 11,437 square kilometers that lies halfway along the west coast of the Arabian Gulf. The population is well over a million, and 61% of the inhabitants live in Doha, the capital city. The official language is Arabic, and Islam is the official religion. The currency is the Qatari Riyal (QR). The time zone is GMT+3, and the IDD code is +974. The climate during the summer is hot with high humidity. The winter months, October through April, offer some of the best weather in the world, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Qatar is experiencing rapid growth, especially in higher education. In addition to the national university, Qatar University, Qatar Foundation, Doha hosts branch campuses of several top universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, Georgetown University, Haute Etudes Commerciales (HEC), Northwestern University, Texas A&M University, University of Calgary, Virginia Commonwealth University and Weill Cornell Medical School.
