7th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks

Cognitive radio provides a flexible platform that enables the design of systems using the spectrum in radically new ways. How to harness the power the cognition offers, is still an open problem. New schemes for spectrum utilization have to be power efficient, be applicable in a large scale networks, and be able to co-exist with legacy systems. Regulatory rules and conformance test procedures need to be defined to assure the protection of the legacy systems. In order to make the cognitive radio a success story also the market mechanisms and value chains need to be defined. Spectrum trading and dynamic access schemes should encourage efficient usage of the spectrum and collaboration among the stakeholders. This conference provides a venue for researchers to propose new solutions to the technical, regulatory and techno-economical problems related to the cognitive radios.
Crowncom is a prime event on Cognitive Radio and the 2012 edition will be hosted in the Scandinavian pearl of Stockholm, Sweden. The program will feature several Keynote speeches, special sessions, workshops and interesting social events.

Welcome from the General Chair
It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to CROWNCOM 2012 – one of the key annual events in shaping the future of wireless systems and the efficient use of the electromagnetic spectrum. At this year’s conference we stand at the crossroads witnessing the first commercial implementations of the technology that has been at the focal point of discussions in previous CROWNCOM conferences. We are currently amidst feverish regulatory work to pave the ground for cognitive techniques and widespread secondary spectrum usage. Going beyond the technical feasibility, one of the key topics of the conference is the commercial scalability of these techniques. Can we go from small scale experiments like the one presently conducted in the UK and in the US, to profitable business with pervasive usage and millions of users? That is literarily the billion dollar question.
The 2012 edition is the 7th conference since the inaugural event held in Mykonos in 2006. The CROWNCOM conferences follow a tradition of a high scientific quality and an informal atmosphere that fosters innovative and open discussions between academia and industry. Looking at the many high quality contributions, I am sure that this year Stockholm edition will be a worthy successor of the previous CROWNCOM events.
My deepest appreciation goes to all that put in a lot of hard work of all who are involved in making this conference a success, including the organizing staff at EAI, my colleagues in the Wireless@KTH local organizing committee, and the sponsors. Very special thanks go to all the reviewers, the members in the technical program committee and in particular to its co-chairman, Riku Jäntti and Min Song for all the efforts that has provided us with this excellent technical program. We look forward to welcoming you in person to Stockholm, one of the hotbeds of mobile and wireless communication. The conference is held in Kista, a “technopole” sometimes referred to as the “Silicon Valley” of Scandinavia. There are more than 1000 companies active in the area and, within walking distance of the conference site, more than 25.000 work in the field of wireless communication and other ICT related issues. KTH and Stockholm University have almost 7000 students in their joint Kista Campus. But it’s not all work - Stockholm is also the city on the water which is best enjoyed in the month of June with its (near) midnight sun conditions. We hope that you will enjoy both the social and technical sides of our conference.

Welcome Message from TPC Chairs
On behalf of Technical Program Committee (TPC), we would like to welcome you to join CrownCom 2012 – The Seventh International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications. In this year, we received paper submissions of 116 regular session papers, 8 Acropolis special session papers, and 11 NSF WiFiUS special session papers. After peer, independent, and rigorous reviews, 62 regular session papers, 5 Acropolis special session papers, and 9 NSF WiFiUS special session papers were accepted. The conference will become very international, since authors are from 20 countries.
The papers cover a broad range of important and timely issues related to spectrum regulation and use of TV white spaces, techno-economical analysis, and development of new concepts and algorithms to further improve the performance of the cognitive radio systems. The papers are grouped into 8 regular sessions 2 poster sessions, and two special sessions. Furthermore, we have 4 valuable keynote speeches. On Wednesday 20th of June, the attendees of the conference have a chance to participate in an open workshop arranged by the EU FP7 project QUASAR. The workshop includes interesting panel discussion: “Secondary spectrum access: A gap filler technology or game changing paradigm?”
This attractive final technical program is the result of the dedication and efforts of 45 TPC members as well as 100 reviewers, who have greatly contributed to the success of the CrownCom 2012 paper review process. We would like to reveal sincere appreciation to all the contributors. We are looking forward to seeing you in Stockholm.
